Embed a word search on your own website
Make a word search, copy a short piece of code and paste it into your page. Your visitors solve the puzzle right there, on the phone or the laptop. It is free, needs no account and sets no cookies.
This is what it looks like
The puzzle below is embedded exactly the way yours will be. Drag across the letters to find a word.
The code for this example
Two parts: the frame with the puzzle and, below it, an ordinary link. The link tells your readers where the puzzle comes from. Please keep it. It is the only thing we ask in return.

Embed the whole maker
Would you like your visitors to make a word search themselves? This frame shows the complete maker: they type their words, pick a shape and print the result or save it as a PDF. Nothing is stored on your page.

Who embeds word searches
Teachers
Vocabulary, spelling words or a quick finisher: put the puzzle on the class page and students solve it on their own devices.
Blogs and magazines
A puzzle at the end of an article keeps readers on the page. Holidays, animals, food or history fit most blogs.
Clubs, parishes and libraries
A word search about your town, your club or the church year for the newsletter page, or a rainy-day puzzle for the children's corner.
Where it works
- WordPress
- Add a “Custom HTML” block and paste the code.
- Google Sites
- Choose Insert, then Embed, then “Embed code”, and paste it.
- Moodle
- Open the HTML view (the <> button) of a Page or a Label and paste the code. If your site removes frames, ask the administrator or use the share link instead.
- Google Classroom
- Classroom posts do not show embedded frames. Attach the share link to the assignment; students open the puzzle with one tap.
- Wix, Squarespace and others
- Use the “Embed HTML” element or the code block and paste the code.
Size
The frame uses the full width of the column, up to 900 pixels. A puzzle needs about 800 pixels of height, the maker about 1,100. On wide pages the word list sits next to the grid, on narrow ones below it. Change the number after height= if you need more or less room.
Optional: height that fits
If your page allows scripts, this snippet sets the frame to exactly the height of its content. Paste it once anywhere on the page. It is recommended for the maker, whose height depends on the width of the screen.
<script>
addEventListener('message', function (e) {
if (e.origin !== 'https://www.wordsearchstudio.org' || !e.data || !e.data.wsEmbedHeight) return;
document.querySelectorAll('iframe').forEach(function (f) {
if (f.contentWindow === e.source) f.style.height = e.data.wsEmbedHeight + 'px';
});
});
</script>
Privacy: nothing that needs your cookie banner
The embedded view sets no cookies, stores nothing in the visitor's browser, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other companies. Fonts and scripts come from our own server, and the puzzle itself is only read in the visitor's browser. As with every frame, our server receives the usual request data (such as the IP address) when the frame loads; the details are in our privacy policy. Privacy policy
Frequently asked questions
Is embedding free?
Yes. Making the puzzle, embedding it and solving it are free, without an account and without ads.
Do I have to keep the link below the puzzle?
Please do. It is how your readers find out where the puzzle comes from, and it is the only thing we ask in return.
Can I change the puzzle after embedding it?
The puzzle is part of the code. To change it, make the new version in the maker and replace the old code with the new one.
Can students see the answers?
The solution is part of the frame's data, so a technically curious student could find it. That is fine for practice and homework, not for exams.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. Visitors drag a finger across a word or tap its first and last letter. The frame adapts to the width of your page.
Which language does the puzzle use?
The language of the page where the code was made. Code from the German page shows German buttons, code from the Spanish page Spanish ones, and so on.
